Circa 1952, the building on the corner was occupied by Pickford's Removals. One of three brothers, Michael Finn sold evening newspapers outside from 4.30 to 6 in the evening. His older brother John sold them at Belling and Lee just up the road and the oldest brother, Phillip, sold outside Sangamo-Weston next door. I was the fourth of these news-sellers, looking after the corner of Lincoln Road and the A10 with Fergusons and Reeves as my main custom base. Wages were around 6s (30p) per week plus tips (Star, Standard and Evening News all sold at 1.5 old pence so Friday saw us generally being given 2d and 'keep the change'). Newspapers were delivered to us by 'Jock' in a pre-war Austin car and we all gathered at Sangamo's gates to hand over the cash and excess papers at 6pm - Winter or Summer, wet, snowy or sweltering. Phillip was to make a career in newspapers, culminating as New York correspondent for the Daily Express. Good memories.
